Wednesday 13th April

Today we were learning about ANZAC day.
We were lucky enough to have Finn's mum, Kelly come and talk to us about ANZAC day.
We created poems using adjectives, verbs and nouns that relate to ANZAC day.
We also got to bake ANZAC cookies and eat them... YUM YUM!!

We have our poems and recipes in our bookbags to share with you :)

Monday 11th April 2016

Good morning,
Hope you all had a great weekend :)

Today in assembly we found out about an exciting writing opportunity.... We get the chance to write a story and have it published in a book. Best of all Kevin Mealamu from the All Blacks will illustrate our story.

'Its story time, and we want you to write us a story. It can be about anything you like. It can be true or completely made up. It can be happy, or scary, or funny or exciting. The best stories will be published in a special story book to raise money for the kids at Starship Hospital.'

How it works.
We are looking for stories with interesting characters and settings. Each story should have an inspirational and positive message, and be no more than 600 words.

We talked about how this could be a holiday activity :) remember it needs to be the children's own writing :)
Please send me any of their stories that you would like me to enter. :) :)

Our word of the week is whainga - goal.
We have talked about setting ourselves goals to work towards.

Thursday 7th April 2016

This morning we had Mandarin and learnt how to introduce ourselves.

We then read 'The Lorax' by Dr Seuss. We talked about what we can do to make sure our world stays sustainable. We discussed what we can teach people and our own children one day about how to look after the planet.
The children came up with lots of good ideas. For homelink the children could create posters teaching people how to look after our planet.

Here are the beautiful sunflowers that the children have drawn on the wall outside our class. We wanted to make our environment look nicer :) We think they look pretty cool :) We are thinking about adding bees to our picture too.

Today we planted sunflower seeds and made timelines to illustrate the steps we took.
We planted King Kong sunflowers, Teddy Bear sunflowers and sunflower seeds that we got from inside a dead, dried sunflower.

Wednesday 6th April 2016

Yesterday we were learning about healthy habits such as brushing our teeth, washing our hands and keeping ourselves clean. We made a tree that illustrates the healthy habits we should follow.

For maths we have been learning some new maths games. We can teach you these for homelink. They are teaching us to sequence numbers and about place value.

Today we talked about germs and how they spread. We discussed that bacteria can only be seen with a microscope. We talked about how germs are tiny, little living things called microorganisms or bacteria and how there can be good and bad bacteria.
We did an experiment to illustrate how germs can spread and learnt how to correctly wash our hands to make sure we are getting rid of germs.
The children created posters about preventing germs from spreading.

For fitness we played line tag and 'flush the toilet' Mrs Farrow joined in as a tagger to try and get us all.

It was nice and sunny so we ate our brain food outside :)

We are learning Maori songs for our school Powhiri. The children got a copy of these last week :) they can be working on these for homelink :)

Today we were looking at how to give feedback and feed forward. We discussed times that we can give feedback and the correct way to give and receive feedback.
These are the ideas the children came up with about giving feedback.
  1. Say it in a positive way
  2. Give people a next step
  3. Tell people what they have done well
  4. Tell people something extra that they can do to improve
  5. Say something good and then their next step
  6. You can say 'good work'
  7. Use stars and stairs to show a positive and a next step

We are on assembly this Friday. Habitat 3 and 5 will be presenting a powerpoint presentation about our trip to the Museum.

I have added new books to the children's Sunshine Classics accounts. They have these usernames and passwords in their homelink books.

Monday 4th April 2016

Hi parents,
Remember that this week and next week are feedback to parent weeks :) looking forward to seeing you all and talking about your child's progress :)

If you can, could you please send your child to school with an old, big t-shirt that will completely cover their uniform so we can use these as art shirts :)

Here are our other photos from the Museum.

Today the children would have bought home a newsletter about ordering Subway for lunch. These slips need to be at school with the money by Friday this week if you wish for your child to have Subway :)

Remember your child can order an iceblock for lunch time this Friday for $1. They just need to bring their money in by Thursday this week :)
