Week 5 term 2 2016

Yesterday Habitat 5 wrote some amazing recounts about their weekends. We are learning how to make our writing more interesting by using our senses, punctuation, descriptive language and using words other that said.

We have been working hard at updating all of our assessments - it is amazing to see the children's progress :) they are very proud and excited about the progress they have made :)

Today we are going to look at creating water cycles in zip-lock bags to help with our understanding about how the water cycle works.

We are going to start looking at a letter of the week. This week we will be looking at the letter 't'. We will discuss the correct letter formation. It would be great if you were on board and could practice this letter for homelink as most children are unable to form all their letters correctly.

Today we will be completing our basic fact assessment - look out for this in our homelink books. We can work on the ones we didn't get right for homelink :)

Week 4 term 2 2016

We have been very busy this week :)

On Monday we were learning how to be responsible for our belongings. We listened to a song on You Tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HOKo8H7dLg about responsibility. We then made our own songs about being responsible at Bayview School.

We also had our second Taekwan Do lesson. Here are some photos.

We started a new shared reading book called Rubbish in the River.

On Tuesday we looked at the rubbish in our lunch boxes. We talked about what could be recycled, re-used or put in the compost.
We made a tally chart and a pictograph to display our findings. Our maths focus for this term is statistics.

We have begun to learn about the water cycle. We talked about evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

We then learnt about compound words and made charts to illustrate these words.

We have been working hard on our JAM assessments (maths) and reading assessments to see how clever we have got :)

Monday 16th May 2016

The kupu o te wiki this week is Turangawaewae - our standing place. We looked into all the things that make us feel as though we belong and are a part of Bayview Primary.

We looked at the word initiative - what does this mean? how can we demonstrate initiative? what does it look like? We created posters to illustrate this.

Today Habitat 5 had their first Taekwan-do lesson. We loved it! We will have these lessons every Monday :)

In shared reading we were learning about keywords. The children can look for keywords in their readers tonight :)

Please remember that tomorrow is our library day so all books will need to be returned :)

Have a great afternoon :)

Week 2 term 2 2016

Habitat 5 have been working very hard this week.
We performed our first Powhiri for over 20 Australian principals and teachers that visited our school on Monday. They did such a fantastic job. :)

Our I CARE value for the term is responsibility. We have been learning about all the ways we can demonstrate responsibility. This would be a good idea to work on for homelink :)

We have been working on guided reading groups on different texts and filling out comprehension booklets to check our understanding of the texts.

We looked at words that we could use instead of said to make our writing more interesting. The children have created a display of this in the classroom. - Come and have a look :)

See how many words your child can come up with instead of using said :)

We have been learning about speech marks and when to use them.

We have started a warm fuzzie box - children write warm fuzzies to people and we read these at the end of each day.

Habitat 5 have been lucky today as they have got to work with a different teacher learning about the Lorax. They have created amazing pieces of art that we will put up in the classroom.

Tuesday 3rd May 2016

Today we did our basic facts test. These are in our homelink books so we can work on the ones we didn't get right.

We read an article from the NZ herald.

It was about people helping clean up our environment. We learnt about things that we can do to help. We have started a post box in our classroom that we put our ideas in about helping our school environment.

We had library today so we will have new library books for this week :)

We set ourselves new goals for this term. Ask us what these were :)

Monday 2nd May 2016

We hope you all had a fantastic holiday! it is sooooo good to be back :)

This morning we talked about all of the classroom routines and what to do before school to refresh our memories. We picked new places to sit and got our new stationary for this term. We talked about how it is our responsibility to look after our own stationary.

We learnt a new Maori word. This is our word for the week.
E hoa - said 'air hor ar'
it means friend.

We learnt to say:
Ko   (name)   taku hoa
(name) is my friend.

We came up with some other sentences that we can use this word in :)

This morning we also learnt about feed back and feed forward. We know that it is when we tell people what they have done well and what their next steps could be. We talked about how we say this in a positive way and how we can act on feedback that we have been given. We acted out role plays in small groups to show what feedback and feed forward looks like.

We wrote stories about our holidays using our 5 senses. We only picked one thing that we did in the holidays so for homelink we could write another story that uses our senses to describe.
