On Wednesday we had someone from the Auckland Council come to speak to us about rubbish.
We learnt that nature has NO rubbish!
Just Auckland's rubbish fills up 10 rugby fields every month!
We learnt where all of our wast rubbish goes and what we can do to help reduce this waste.
Reduce
Reuse
Recycle
Our goal is to make less rubbish at school and at home!
We learnt that if we put food scraps into our normal rubbish that the gases coming off them can cause underground explosions. This gas is not good for global warming and our environment.
We learnt that we should compost our food waste instead and use it to feed worms or to feed our gardens.
Did you know? ... That if we recycle 1m of stacked paper we would be saving 1 tree!
We learnt:
- That paper comes from trees
- Plastic is made from oil
- Drink bottles can be recycled and made into jumpers
- Milk bottles can be recycles and made into recycle bins
- Ice-cream lids can be made into pegs
We need to keep recycling so we don't need to take the Earth's resources.
We learnt that cans are made from iron sand.
Glass is made from silica sand.
Aluminium is made from bauxite from Australia.
Did you know? .... If we recycle just one can - that is enough energy to run a TV for a whole year!
The Earth does not have enough resource for us to keep using! We need to look after our Earth and Reduse, Reuse, Recycle!
We then sorted through rubbish and put the rubbish into the recycling, paper bins, compost bins and waste bins.
Next Wednesday we are going to do a waste audit for our school. We will collect and sort through all of our schools rubbish and enter the data with the Auckland council. We will do this again later in the year to see if we have reduced our waste!
This is awesome guys! What a great idea, to learn more about where the rubbish goes after it is put in the bin.
